Wind Chime Materials – what you need for my favorite Earth Day Craft for Preschool!

  • A paper cup
  • Hole punch
  • String or yarn
  • Fun stuff for decorating (think pasta, bells, beads)
  • Scissors
  • Optional: washable paint in assorted colors, markers, stickers for jazzing up the cup

How to Make Your Wind Chime:

1. Prep the Cup: Grab your paper cup and punch holes around the top edge using the hole punch. You can go for a neat row of holes or get wild and make funky patterns – totally up to you!

2. String Your Stuff: Now comes the fun part! Thread your string or yarn through your decorations. Get creative with it! Mix up the colors, add different textures – make it totally your own.

3. Tie ‘Em Up: Flip your cup upside down and tie the strings to the holes you punched earlier. Make sure they’re nice and secure – we don’t want our decorations flying off in the wind!

4. Hang it Up: Time to find the perfect spot for your wind chime! Use your scissors to poke a hole in the top, then thread a piece of string through it. Hang it from a tree, your porch, or anywhere you like.

Let Your Imagination Run Wild

Feel free to go crazy with your wind chime! Decorate the cup with paints, markers, or stickers before you add the strings. And don’t be shy about trying out different materials for your decorations – the weirder, the better!

WHY this is my favorite Earth Day craft for preschool!

This craft isn’t just about having fun – it’s also a chance to learn and grow:

1. Fine Motor Skills: Threading string through those tiny holes and stringing on decorations? That’s great practice for little fingers! It’ll help with all sorts of stuff, like writing and tying shoelaces.

2. Express Yourself: Decorating your windchime is your chance to show off your style! Whether you’re into rainbows, jingles, or funky designs, your windchime will be one-of-a-kind, just like you.

3. Hands-on Learning: Infuse the project with conversation about ways we can upcycle and take care of the Earth! You may even want to read aloud a book about Earth Day while kids’ work and create.

Why Upcycling Rocks:

Earth Day is all about showing our planet some love, and upcycling is a fantastic way to do it. By giving old stuff new life, we’re reducing waste and giving the Earth a big high-five!
